author and dog trainerFour quick dog training tips for owners who would love a happy, healthy and well-balanced dog.

1. Never say the word ‘come’ in an aggressive or frustrated tone of voice because the dog will learn an aversion to the word. Next when you want them to come, they will remember what happened last time and think they’ll be in trouble.

2. Now here’s a strange one for you - in order for dogs to respect you they have to think of you as the top dog. So, trying spitting in your dogs food just before you give it to him or her and they’ll know that you are in the more dominant position.

3.Praise and reward your dog when they are being obedient and doing what you ask of them.

4. Make the training sessions short, repeat them over time so that the dog gets a chance to learn and make them fun.

Learn to overcome separation anxiety in dogs, toilet training problems, barking and biting as well as general obedience. pet safety for the carKeeping your pet safe both at home and in your vehicle.

Before bringing our new pet home, we need to look at interior pet safety in our homes and vehicles. We may get very excited to bring the new puppy, kitten, dog or cat home and we may not think about the safety of our new family pet in the interior of our house, yard and vehicle.

Potentials hazards to your pet’s safety include:

  1. Electrical cords – make sure they are tucked away and out of reach of the teething pet
  2. Fireplaces without screens, wood burning stoves and burning candles
  3. Never leash an animal to a balcony or porch from which they could fall
  4. Poisonous plants you may unknowingly have in your home. Easiest to eliminate real plants and use silk plants in the interior of your home to insure the safety of your pets
  5. Ponds and swimming pools – most young cats and dogs can swim but not for long periods. Even the interior of your home includes threats to your pet’s safety; bathtubs or sinks are very dangerous for kittens and puppies.

For some great products and more information on pet safety, go to www.petsandpetals.com.

flea treatmentsIt is imperative that you understand flea treatment methods if you share your space with a pet. Hopefully, you have never experienced fleas, but they can occur even if your pet is always indoors.

Fleas can arrive with both human and animals visitors to your home. If you move to a new living space which had pets in residence, you can also inherit a flea problem from the previous resident which will require treatment as fleas can live without a meal from your pet for more than 100 days.

For information on the flea life cycle and how to get rid of them, visit petsandpetals.com.

dog foodDog Health
Degenerative Myelopathy

This condition is relatively common among GSDs. It can appear in a young dog, but generally appears from middle age. The degeneration occurs over time, beginning with hind limb weakness. Eventually other weakness can occur, including the lower portion of the esopheogus, which makes complete swallowing difficult and can lead to recurrent pneumonias. Although initial signs resemble hip dysplasia, in actuality, it is the degeneration of the spinal cord rather than hip joints.

Elbow Dysplasia

Elbow dysplasia is characterized by an onset of severe lameness at between 4 and 6 months of age. It almost always affects only one of the elbows but occasionally will affect both. There are three different types of elbow dysplasia: UAP (ununited anconeal process), FCP (fractured coronoid process), and OCD (osteochondrosis). OCD more resembles arthritis in the elbow that may or may not be brought on by trauma or looseness of ligamentation at the elbow. Final diagnosis can only be made by radiograph. OFA now certifies elbows as well as hips. (See OFA Information and Statistics)

Epilepsy

This may possibly be genetically transmitted. At the least, the tendency exists in a few lines. The disorder may not express itself until the dog is about three to four years old. There is no way of testing for the disease until the dog has a seizure. (cm)

Hip Dysplasia

The hip joint is not constructed properly, usually with a shallow acetabulum. Dysplastic dogs can vary from minor problems to severe dislocation of the hips. This condition is generally considered to be inherited. Breeding stock should be OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals)certified (look for an OFA number) or given an “A” certificate if from Germany. (Canada OVC) Current statistics indicate that over 20% of x-rays sent in for OFA certification fail. (See OFA Information and Statistics.)

fancy dog bedDo we even NEED a Dog Bed?

dog printIdeally, we’re looking for something made in the USA, veterinarian approved, and kennel tested.

Think twice before you buy so-called tough, indestructible puppy toys for chewers. Manufacturer’s promises, promises. Ahh, but we’re smart enough to purchase strong, tough toys that have a guarantee. This way, if the manufacturer doesn’t own a large dog or hasn’t any clue how fast an aggressive chewer (even a puppy) can shred, we can ship the pieces back to them for product research and development.

Hard to find and where to buy indestructible dog toys for chewers does not have to be a time-consuming waste of money. Find out what this dog owner learned.
