Gum disease is a common condition that can lead to tooth loss if not controlled. A diseased gum may progress painlessly, producing few obvious signs, even in the late stages of the disease and it is also known as periodontal disease and periodontitis which is an inflammatory condition affecting the tissues surrounding a tooth, and is the leading cause of tooth loss. Gum disease begins with plaque, which is always forming on your teeth, without you even knowing it. Your dental hygienist can detect the early stages of gum disease, when it is the easiest to treat. The bad gum condition can get worse when one has improper dental hygiene and plaque is not removed through daily dental hygiene practices and regular professional dental cleanings, bacteria may set in and cause gingivitis, which may eventually result in advanced gum disease which is periodontitis.
