When certain symptoms of gum disease are left unattended with maximum oral health care and treatment, chronic periodontitis is rising its track. Chronic periodontitis by far the most common of the more serious periodontal diseases. In this form, there is still degeneration of the gums and bone but it occurs at a much slower rate. In addition, however, chronic periodontitis is also characterized by the formation of pockets in between the gums and teeth. In these pockets, the harmful bacteria grow at a very rapid rate and the end result could be a loosening of the teeth. At its most severe, chronic periodontitis will actually cause the teeth to fall out. Periodontal diseases like chronic periodontitis are most common in adults and the result of poor or inadequate oral hygiene. Although a rather lengthy term, this just refers to periodontitis caused by a larger problem such as diabetes. In other words, this is not due to poor oral hygiene but rather the result of a weakened immune system or overtaxed body.
