When it comes to the design and layout of a Home Music Recording Studio, most of us don’t have the luxury of dedicating space to separate functions: performing musicians, vocal booth, control room, loads of equipment and so on. So we have to do the best we can with what we’ve got. My studio is a converted one car garage with a wall knocked through to an adjacent room that also serves as my home office. At the outset, I did pay some attention to sound proofing the room against sound getting in (traffic, neighbors kids, barking dogs etc), and sound getting out (sometimes we just crank it up and jam and we don’t want irate people knocking on the door at 1am in the morning).
More recently I have paid some particular attention to the acoustic treatment inside the studio as well. Not only does this improve the recording conditions inside the studio, but it also help significantly with sound getting in and out.
One other thing you need to consider in your design and layout. Two of the most pervasive sources of noise are CRT PC Displays and fluorescent lighting. To be safe, use an LCD PC Monitor and the regular incandescent light bulbs to light the room.
